Meet Kandie jennings-molloy
Tom's Automotive has been operating in West Seattle for 54 years! It was started by Tom, and it has been woman owned since 2010. When I met Kandie, I was so impressed with her enthusiasm and care for her employees. She goes above and beyond as an owner and also works to support others in the community from High School Job fairs to serving on various industry related roles and leadership boards.
It has been a real joy to get to know her and her team. I had the chance to photograph them a few times as the shop has changed over the past few years. When Kandie told me she was ready to put herself up on a billboard and visually share that Tom's is woman-owned, she made a dream of mine come true: to have a portrait on a billboard!
Now, I'm happy to share more about Kandie and Tom's Automotive through this Client Spotlight interview below.
How would you describe what you do?
We are an independent automotive repair shop that provides service and repair on cars, trucks, SUV’s, hybrids and electric vehicles.
How did you decide to focus on this area of work?
I started my career in the automotive world right after high school. It was accidental really; I was going to school to become a surgical nurse and needed a job. I was hired at a dealership as a part time receptionist. While there I also worked in their parts and service departments.
What inspired you to go full time in this business/career?
While at the dealership I had the opportunity to learn to be a service advisor and found it was a good fit for me. I was hired at Tom’s in 1991 and was blessed to have Tom be a fantastic mentor that saw my potential. I eventually bought the business from him in July 2010. I’ve now been at the shop for over 34 years and have owned it for almost 15!
What advice or tips would you like to share for those considering this career path?
The automotive world has so much to offer that people don’t even think about. There are a lot of career opportunities that fit individual styles and provide financial stability. I love speaking to students and adults that are considering a career as a service advisor, technician or even a shop owner. I enjoy the opportunity to give back, my career choice has been a huge blessing.
